A note from Lori & Paul Blythe

We have sold our house and will be moving this weekend. We had hoped to get more individual goodbyes done, but have just gotten too busy with packing and all that goes with it. We have some wonderful memories from St Paul from church softball to seeing all three of our children confirmed. We just felt now is the time to move North of Des Moines to be closer to our kids, grandkids, and Lori’s parents.  We wish you well in this year of transition and I’m sure we’ll be back to visit often. Our new address: Paul and Lori Blythe, 1354 Nook Place, Boone, Iowa  50036.

Peace be with you!

Introducing:  Assisting Ministers

Did you know that the literal meaning of the word liturgy, is “The Work of the People”?  You will notice today a new role listed under the heading of “Assisting in Today’s Worship”, which is that of “Assisting Minister”.

When we gather for worship, we are all ministers, assembled to pray, sing, praise, hear God’s word, celebrate communion and be sent forth in mission. This theological approach towards shared leadership is based on Paul’s description of the church in first Corinthian’s “… for just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ” (1 Cor. 12:12.)

The ministries of the baptized are many and can include: readers, ministers of communion, prayer leaders, cantor and other musicians, ushers, greeters and more.  All of these individual ministries contribute to the health of the one body.  “Each kind of minister has particular functions which are needed for the whole … no leader leads with their own authority; rather each leader uses the skills they have for the good of the assembly”  (The Sunday Assembly, 75).

The history of the lay leadership in worship is a diverse one, but the vision expressed in Evangelical Lutheran Worship recovers the idea imagined in the very early church and in the New Testament: “a presiding minister in the midst of an active assembly, with many other lay ministers assisting in the assembly in its worship”.

While the role of the “Presiding Minister” is most often carried out by an ordained pastor, we are pleased to continue to grow as a church with ongoing expansion of our lay ministry and leadership.

Blessings to each and every one of us as we strive to discover and develop our own calling in ministry, in and through the body of Christ here at St. Paul Lutheran Church!

A Note from the Stewardship Committee

As we begin the new Church year, it’s important to talk about Stewardship.  The 3 principles of Stewardship are Time, Talent and Treasure. Here at St. Paul we do an amazing job dedicating our time and talent in a variety of ways.  Greeters, Ushers, Communion Servers, Bread Makers, Sound System, Readers, Musicians, Choir, Blood Pressure/Blood Sugar Screenings, Kitchen Crew, God Squad, Sunday School, Lawn Care, Quilters and many other ways we serve, such as serving on various committees and Church Council.

Giving financially is also important and is sometimes more difficult, as we all have budgets in our daily lives.  As we all contemplate filling out our Estimate of Giving cards this year, I would ask that you consider giving just a little bit more.  I understand that some people will be able to give more and some people may have to give less than they have in the past.  If, as a whole, we can give just 1% more than we have in the past it will help.

The Stewardship Committee is looking for ideas on fundraising projects that we can do throughout the year.  If you have any thoughts or ideas, please share them with me, I promise you won’t have to join the committee if you don’t want to, however;  if you do want to join we would love to have as many people as we can.  Feel free to call, text or email me your thoughts and/or ideas.  Remember, Stewardship is our way of giving thanks to God for all He provides to us by giving back to the Church.
